Hackers, Scammers & Fake Friends; in the pursuit of your data

Not being the bad actors seen in Hollywood movies, these “Bad Actors” are a term to describe threats to a person, business or asset – otherwise known properly as Threat Actors. These people can include hackers, scammers, fake friends, disgruntled employees and even some governments! Generally, these people have certain motives supporting what they want, like money.
However, a clear goal for these threat actors is to achieve one thing, obtaining access to your personal information to abuse it. With personal information, they can sign you up to unwanted services, dox or stalk you, or use you as bait for other attacks.
Personal Information includes details that are specific to you:
A large majority of companies will ask for your personal information for two reasons normally – one being more optimistic than the other.
Selling your information: Many businesses gather your data in order to profit by either selling it to marketers or using it to target you with adverts that are more relevant to you. In most cases, your data is sold if the service is free.
Using your information: Businesses that are providing a service or product require to know you to ensure they are following laws in their jurisdiction – especially if they are shipping an item, they need to make sure that it is actually you that receives such product.
It is always a good habit to browse the companies about page or Privacy Policy to see what they are doing, how they handle and what protection they have emplaced with your data. You should never openly share this information unless you are aware of what will happen with it. Bullies are another bad actor that may want to use your information to cause cyber bullying.
Everyday we connect to websites and Wi-Fi networks to access the internet for a multitude of reasons. However, cybercriminals will take advantage of these tools to get access to your device. If access is granted, these criminals may deploy malware to your device which will infect it. Depending on the malware, they will steal your information, hold it for ransom or more which you can read here – what are the types of malware?
You must be vigilant in knowing what you are connecting to; public “free” Wi-Fi are a hot spot for these criminals to monitor the network. You should never use these networks to access sensitive information such as banking. While at home, an average of 17 devices connect to the internet. With this, ensure all devices are operating on the most recent stable operating system – this will protect everything from exploits and attacks such as Day Zero exploits.
When connecting to a public website, always look for a padlock icon in the or around the search bar, this will easily tell you that the site is SSL secure with a HTTPS protocol. This ensures that the data being transported from you to the website is encrypted with AES-256 encryption – an industry standard method.
Your account is yours for a reason, using a secure strong passphrase is essential alongside a multi-factor authentication method in protecting your data. Almost 1 in 5 teenagers have shared their password with a friend, partner or family member. In hindsight it may be an easy way of telling them you ‘have nothing to hide’, however, this only increases your chances of falling victim to an attack.
By using multi-factor authentication (a one-time code, Face ID or a PIN code), it acts an extra layer of account security which creates a safe environment that only you truly have access to. Alongside this, replacing passwords with passphrase will allow a much more complex method for threats attempting to gain access to your accounts. a passphrase is a password that consists of four or more seemingly unrelated words. Don’t reuse any of your previous passphrases and try to come up with new ones for each of your accounts. You can generate and remember complicated passwords that are difficult for others to guess or hack with the aid of a password manager tool on your computer, phone, or both. With a combination of both methods, MFA & passphrase, you will be completely protected from brute force attacks.
