Turkmenistan is a Middle Eastern nation which comprises a conservative nature in politics. The foreign nation is generally suppressed to a majority of educated people due to its obliviousness and no real benefits to ruling states. Turkmenistan shares similarities to modern day medieval structure in North Korea with a Chain of Being placing the leaders at the top and all others below, especially foreigners. The purpose of this article is to provide a brief look into this nation and not the full detail, please refer to the mentioned sources for more information.
Due to the lack of evidential resources available, it is determined that Australia shares little-to-no relationship to Turkmenistan. The closest relation with consideration to Turkmenistan is the Australian Russian Embassy with the ambassador being Mr Graeme Meehan (Government, Ambassador of Australia to the Russian Federation, 2021). This embassy corresponds with other Asian countries within the region also. This is due to the political standpoints of Turkmenistan which constitute it as slightly aggressive towards nations which attempt to interfere with their dealings.
Apart from the rich culture of Turkmenistan, they also have a soft diplomacy, which within theory highlights the democratic voting. However, Turkmenistan has been ranked #128/137 globally on their political transformation (Index, 2021). In conjunction to this, Turkmenistan is a democratic and secular presidential republic. It is oblique on how often the citizens of Turkmenistan vote; however, they follow a constitution which elects for head of state and first chamber which is held by universal and equal suffrage (constituteproject.org, 2021).
Within accordance to its political ideology, the foreign nation continues to follow the laws which were first implemented by the Soviet Union during the 1980s (Oleg Stalbovskiy, 2021). Due to this, the nation follows a stringent legal system. Public displays of affection are strongly not advised, as this can cause harassment from communities or police which may lead to imprisonment, especially expressing fondness towards the same sexuality as this will lead to incarceration. In conjunction, those who are accused of homosexuality in prosecution trials are susceptible to “forcing anal testing” (Watch, Uzbekistan: Forced Anal Testing in Homosexuality Prosecutions, 2021) in an attempt to disgrace those which may have an affectionate attraction to those of the same sex.
In comparison, Australia has a judiciary system which is accepting to the LGBTQ+ community and allowed same-sex marriage within 2017 and doesn’t expose any citizens to these extremes standards at all (Department, 2021). As if they were, they’dd be subject to public scrutiny and legislative powers.
Within Turkmenistan, there is clear outline that there is need to respect hospitality and elders. Similar to Australian first nations’ people’s elders, as it is unacceptable to disrespect, argue or not help nor listen to their advice. A part of this is their conditioning towards ancient traditions such as rich material which is not to be neglected within the dinning environment, such as stepping on the material or using it in an uncaring or disrespecting manner.
Sexual identity is conservative, (unlike Australia which has legalised same-sex marriage) such acts which are deemed to be sexual is illegal and will result in imprisonment. Unlike Australia which has abolished such laws in 2017 (Watch, Two Years in Prison for Gay Sex in Turkmenistan, 2021) (Michael Flood, 2021). People may also be subject to public beatings or other forms of harassment by police or people.
Clothing is a part of Turkmenistan’s cultural appropriation, as they continue to wear material which is luxurious and manifest into their daily activities and represents a robe. Whereas in Australia, the majority of population wear clothing designed for practicality over traditional settlement.
Turkmenistan is reported to have high rates of: pickpocketing, mugging, unlicensed taxis, and bandit gangs which harass foreigners visiting the nation. In addition, travelling alongside the border of Afghanistan is informed to be dangerous due to the current climax of insurgent uprising (Government, Turkmenistan, 2021) and over throwing of government in Afghanistan.
In addition to this, Turkmenistan has an above normal number of earthquakes which may pose a struggle for travelling Australians to the region as well as a population of small bears, because of this it is strongly recommended staying within areas of surveillance (Government, Turkmenistan, 2021) and those which can be trusted in populated areas.
The health department of Turkmenistan has been questioned into the management of vital medical items, many essential requirements are in short supply and treatment may be required to be paid in cash. It is also extremely advised to only consume water in bottles and cooked food due to pre-existing diseases like cholera, hepatitis, measles tuberculosis and typhoid (Government, Turkmenistan, 2021).
Turkmenistan is a highly driven state which adhere to their customs and political ideology. This poses a threat to the national cultural of unconscious Australian’s travelling here. An Australian citizen who wants to experience a fragmented life of someone from Turkmenistan must consider the current expectations constituted by the foreign nation. Displaying public affections towards loved ones, being someone from the LGBTQ+ and being a foreigner are all factors which will include you being hassled by locals and officials.
However, Turkmenistan does create a rich cultural that many Australians would consider experiencing. Such as the Door to hell (a man-made gas crater) and the astounding marble capital of Ashgabat. Not only this, but the traditions which aren’t seen in Australia due to Turkmenistan’s population being 80% Muslim compared to Australia’s 2.6% Muslim population (Review, 2021) (Muslim Australians, 2021).
An informed Australian which can provide adequate visa and be competent in respecting cultural norms and ideally be able to avail from mistreatment are permitted to attend, however, Australia is most likely unable to help in event of mistreatment as the nearest embassy is in Moscow, Russia. Because of this information, Level 3 in travel is advised due to treatment on foreigners.
